The staff RN is a professional caregiver who assumes responsibility and accountability for a group of patients for a designated time frame and provides care to these patients via the nursing process and other input from healthcare team members. Responsible for the all-around healthcare needs of patients who are under the care management of the faculty members on an as needed basis.  Acts as liaison between the MDs, the patients (including the family and staff members), schedulers, clinic staff and UCLA and non-UCLA physicians involved with the patients’ healthcare.  Provides up-to-date patient status reporting to the physicians and nurse supervisor by presenting laboratory or procedural results either in written or verbal form as well as conveying information from patients.  Performs clinical nursing duties that includes but not limited to assisting physicians in performing procedures in endoscopy area, GI lab, administering medications and, monitoring vital signs and medications, and provide health education, procedure instruction/information to patients and families.


Skill in reading and interpreting comprehensive medical procedures and making them easily understood by patients and families with appropriate vocabulary. Skill in working independently to complete multiple complex tasks with rapid changes in priorities. Demonstrated strong organizational skills to facilitate an extremely busy and demanding office environment. Ability to work efficiently and calmly under pressure. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with tact and sensitivity at all levels. Ability to deal effectively with patients, physicians, technicians, and other staff members. Ability to serve as a key response person to patients, physicians, technicians and staff members. Demonstrated ability to create and maintain cooperative and respectful working relationships with staff members, physicians, technicians, patients and all other UCLA staff. Skill in assessing and meeting patients’ various emotional and physical needs in a timely manner. Skill in setting and recognizing priorities; ability to react and perform effectively in medical emergencies. Skills in listening and obtaining knowledge to provide accurate reporting to the physicians. Strong interpersonal skills to effectively interact with large variety of individuals, including staff members, physicians and patients. Willingness to provide individualized services to patients. Ability to arrange for referrals and consultations on short notice. Ability to work independently with minimal supervision yet function as a team. Ability to maintain patient confidentiality at all times. Ability to work overtime when necessary and provide back up support in times of absences, vacations, etc. Current State of California Nursing license, current CPR/BCLS card. PC proficiency in a Windows environment and Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Internet, E-mail. Knowledge in the use of EMR. Ability to travel between the endoscopy area/GI lab when necessary. Demonstrate knowledge in all areas of care specific to endoscopy area/GI Laboratory, including conscious sedation.  Knowledge of cardiac monitoring and ability to identify dysrhythmias. Demonstrate an ability to assist physicians in performing procedures in the endoscopy area/GI Laboratory practicing medical and surgical asepsis at all times. Self-motivated with providing the best patient healthcare and patient privacy as the main priorities. Knowledgeable in pharmacology/drug interactions/side effects. Ability to complete a Nursing physical assessment. Skill in developing a plan of care including setting goals, monitoring and documenting progress. Ability to implement interventions that are pertinent to goals established in the plan of care. Ability to evaluate the effective of interventions toward the attainment of established goals and to recognize the need to reassess or reset goal parameters. Ability to delegate tasks in a management style that is consistent with promoting leadership and teamwork. Knowledge base to provide education to patients, families, and other staff regarding clinical and patient care issues. California Registered Nursing License/or CA IPRN. Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation Certification. Greater than 6 months nursing experience.
