Nurse Practitioner- Operating Room Cardiac Surgery

Under the general supervision of the Director of Nursing and Operations or designee, the cardiac OR Nurse Practitioner (NP) is an assistant in cardiac operations and will provide patient care and management in the operating room and at bedside.  Major functions include obtaining a comprehensive history and physical examination, psychosocial assessment, accurate interpretations of diagnostic test results, and collaboration with interdisciplinary team members to formulate timely treatment plan of care and follow-up management. The incumbent will work under the clinical supervision of the Cardio-thoracic surgeons and perform standardized procedures for adults, geriatric and pediatric surgery patients. The NP is responsible for patient assessment, planning, initiating medical interventions and diagnostic workup, problem solving, pharmacological management, maintaining efficient care flow, providing patient, family and community education. Patient care will be documented with timely notes and dictation as appropriate. NP will attend division conferences and lectures on their work days, including but not limited to daily Multidisciplinary Rounds, Performance Improvement, Thru-Put, Morbidity and Mortality conferences, Grand Rounds and patient selection committee meetings unless patient care dictates otherwise.


Possess a MSN degree with Nurse Practitioner California Nursing license, Drug Furnishing privilege. Required to take one surgical call per week and scheduled 24 hour weekend calls. Skills preferred include endoscopic harvesting of veins and/or arteries for CABG procedures, opening and closing the chest, cannulation, decannulation, planning and coordinating all aspects of work within the intraoperative period. TAVR and robot experience would be valued. Some working experience with patients with Cardiac diseases. Skill in taking medical histories and performing physical examinations, assessments and implementing appropriate diagnostic and therapeutic plans using established medical practice in collaboration with attending physician. Skill in reading, interpreting, applying and following physician orders, policies, procedures, or written and verbal instructions. Ability to interpret and act appropriately on results of diagnostic tests. Skill in creating a teaching plan for patient and family education, and ability to effectively communicate this plan and assess its effectiveness. Skills in prioritizing heavy workloads and deadlines, with ability to follow through. Skills in working independently with minimal supervision. Interpersonal skills to interact effectively with multidisciplinary medical team. Ability to extemporaneously explain any facet of a patient care plan to interdisciplinary team members. Skill in using PC word processing, and knowledge of Medical Center computing systems. Ability to dictate admissions, discharge, and other case notes.
